Love in the 21st Century: Honouring a Legacy of Connection and Healing
This past Canada Day weekend, as the nation recognized those who have shaped our society for the better, we were reminded of the incredible legacy of Dr. Sue Johnson, founder of the International Centre for Excellence in Emotionally Focused Therapy (ICEEFT) and a recipient of Canada’s highest civilian honour, the Order of Canada.
In 2016, Dr. Johnson was appointed as a Member of the Order of Canada for her outstanding achievements, dedication to the community, and service to the nation. Her work revolutionized the way we understand love and emotional connection in relationships. As the developer of Emotionally Focused Therapy (EFT), she not only advanced the field of psychology but profoundly changed lives—couples, families, and individuals—across the globe.
Dr. Johnson’s work combined scientific insight, therapeutic innovation, and heartfelt humanity. Her bestselling book, Hold Me Tight, brought EFT to the wider public, and her global training efforts continue to influence thousands of therapists today. Her leadership made ICEEFT a beacon for evidence-based care rooted in the science of bonding and attachment.
Though we lost Sue just over a year ago, her voice and vision remain vibrant in our community. As we mark another Canada Day, we celebrate not only her national recognition but the personal transformations made possible by her work.
